The Regional University Hospital of Malaga and IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND organise the second 7-a-side football tournament for the benefit of biomedical research.

    • A total of 16 teams from different organisations such as associations, companies and health professionals will take part in a competition to be held on 31 May and 1 June.

The Regional University Hospital of Malaga and the Biomedical Research Institute of Malaga and Nanomedicine Platform (IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND) have organised the second edition of the 7-a-side football tournament for the benefit of biomedical research. The sporting event, which will take place on the afternoon of Friday 31 May and the morning of 1 June, will be held at the Sports Complex of the University of Malaga (UMA).

A total of 16 teams made up of 21 members each will compete to reach the grand final in a competition where the main objective is to participate with the economic contribution to allocate funds to different lines of research or biomedical research projects within the IBIMA BIONAND Platform, which are developed at the Regional University Hospital of Malaga.

The competition format will be a knock-out format starting with a round of 16 on the first day, followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals, third and fourth place play-offs and the grand final.

The presentation ceremony of the tournament was attended by the territorial delegate of Health and Consumption of the Andalusian Regional Government, Carlos Bautista, the managing director of the Regional Hospital of Malaga, José Antonio Ortega, accompanied by the director of Management and General Services of the hospital, Paula Corrales, the scientific vice-director of IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND, Pedro Serrano, as well as the Deputy Vice-Rector of Strategic Projects, Institutional Relations and University Welfare of the UMA, Consolación Pineda.

In addition, work is currently underway to involve not only teams, but also sponsors to join the list of entities that support this sporting event with donations for biomedical research.

The sporting event will also have a ‘Fila Cero’ for all those who cannot participate or attend and wish to collaborate with this charitable cause. In this case, this year, as a novelty, there will be a digital platform where you can make a donation through the https://whydonate.com/es/donate/torneo-futbollineas-investigacion2024

At the official presentation of this charity tournament, Carlos Bautista said he was ‘very proud to have an initiative in Malaga in which up to 300 people participate with 16 teams in an event in which the aim is to score a goal together in favour of biomedical research’. An initiative that, in Bautista's words, ‘means a lot in supporting our professionals in obtaining results in the laboratory that are directly transferred to clinical practice’

For his part, José Antonio Ortega, pointed out that ‘this type of initiative is very interesting for creating a habit within Malaga society of the need to support biomedical research, which has a direct impact on healthcare due to its translational nature’.

In addition, Ortega pointed out that ‘this hospital has an important network of associations and entities that since they have known the idea of repeating this edition have contacted us to collaborate again in some way or another’, something that, for Ortega ‘tells us the enormous commitment from different entities of the city with this tournament and with solidarity to support a charitable cause such as the contribution of funds for research’. Furthermore, Paula Corrales added that ‘she would like to thank the group of companies that have shown an interest in the initiative, either financially or in kind, for this sporting event’.

In addition, Pedro Serrano, deputy scientific director of IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND, head of the Neurology Service at the Regional Hospital of Malaga and coordinator of the Andalusian Network of Clinical and Translational Research in Neurology (NeuroRECA) said he felt ‘proud that sport and research go hand in hand in this type of initiative’. Thus, Serrano said that ‘this is a project that involves an effort by companies, associations, health professionals and, ultimately, the public to support biomedical research while having fun playing sport, which is still a healthy activity’. In addition, Serrano acknowledged feeling ‘very proud that the Institute is leading this type of initiative which, together with the Regional Hospital of Malaga, is now in its second edition’, as this fact reinforces the ‘loyalty and commitment of everyone to continue supporting projects that are stable and can be held on a regular basis year after year’.

For her part, the UMA's Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Strategic Projects, Institutional Relations and University Welfare, Consolación Pineda, said she was ‘very proud to be, for the second year running, the hosts of this tournament, hosting this event in the Sports Complex of the University of Malaga and putting at the service of the initiative all the infrastructures they need for the practice of the 17 7-a-side football matches that will take place, encouraging not only the teams, but also the public to attend and feel part of it outside the field of play’.

In addition, the organisers of the tournament are planning to organise activities to entertain the public during the half-time breaks of the matches by means of a solidarity penalty shoot-out with the handing out of gifts and presents thanks to the collaboration of some companies.
