Researchers from Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Victoria and IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND participate in a Clinical Practice Guideline to improve the management of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Cardiovascular Disease.

Researchers from the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Victoria and the Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Málaga (IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND), have participated in the development of an important Clinical Practice Guideline for the improvement of patient treatment. Dr. Juan José Gómez Doblas, Co-investigator in charge of the 'Cardiovascular Research for Health' group, has been in charge of leading this guide both at the hospital and at the Institute, as he has coordinated the group of experts from the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC) who have developed the clinical practice guide of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) for the multidisciplinary management of patients suffering from both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

The guide, published in the prestigious international magazine Archives of Bronchopneumologyresponds to the urgent need to integrate the care of these pathologies, given that cardiovascular events are the main cause of hospitalization in patients with COPD, and up to 40% of these patients die from cardiovascular diseases. This interrelationship underscores the importance of joint and efficient management of both conditions.

In this regard, the guidelines emphasize the importance of close collaboration between pulmonologists and cardiologists to improve clinical outcomes and health system efficiency, avoiding duplicate procedures and inconsistent approaches.

It also highlights the importance of prevention and early diagnosis to aid in clinical decision making, and of pharmacological treatment with long-acting bronchodilators (LAMA or LABA) and triple therapy for significant reduction in mortality and hospitalizations.

This innovative work provides clear criteria for the identification of patients with COPD who may develop CVD and vice versa, including when it is necessary to refer patients to cardiology or pulmonology, thus improving the prevention and early diagnosis of these interrelated diseases and, therefore, the efficiency of healthcare.

“This guide is a crucial advance in the care of patients with COPD and cardiovascular diseases, who are often caught in a cycle of fragmented diagnoses and treatments,” explained Dr. Gómez Doblas, who is also co-investigator in charge of IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND and the Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red - Enfermedades Cardiovasculares (CIBERCV). In this regard, Dr. Gómez Doblas emphasized that “our goal is to provide healthcare professionals with the necessary tools for a more comprehensive and coordinated approach, thus improving clinical outcomes and the quality of life of patients. Collaboration between pulmonologists and cardiologists is not only desirable, it is essential to address these complex challenges.”

This clinical practice guideline represents a significant advance towards more integrated and effective healthcare, with the aim of improving patients' quality of life and reducing the burden on the healthcare system. The collaboration between SEPAR and SEC marks a milestone in the management of these complex health conditions.
