Francisco José Tinahones Madueño is the Scientific Director of IBIMA and Principal Investigator/Manager at the Institute. Chief of the Endocrinology and Nutrition Department at the Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital of Málaga. Full Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of Málaga. Former President of the Spanish Society for the Study of Obesity (SEEDO). Clinical Medicine and Epidemiology Coordinator at the State Research Agency. Member of the Scientific Committee at CIBERobn.
Autor de más de 775 publicaciones originales en revistas médicas indexadas y revisadas por pares, además de ser citado en más de 77.000 ocasiones. Índice de impacto acumulado de las publicaciones superior a 3500. Índice de H de 102. Investigador principal de más de 35 proyectos competitivos públicos nacionales y europeos y de más de 120 ensayos clínicos en las áreas de la diabetes y la obesidad. 35 tesis doctorales dirigidas. Premio Nacional a la mejor trayectoria de grupo de la SEEN. Medalla de Oro de la SEEDO.
Desde Julio de 2019, pertenece al Comité Asesor de la Secretaria general de Investigación de la Consejería de Salud de la Junta de Andalucía. Desde octubre de 2025, asume la Presidencia la Sociedad Española de Endocrinología y Nutrición (SEEN).
Javier Márquez Gómez

Javier Márquez is the deputy scientific director of the IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND Institute and lead researcher of Group B-07: “Canceromics” at the Institute. Dr. Márquez is a full professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Málaga and scientific manager of the Proteomics Research Support Services since 2007. He completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Missouri - Kansas City in the United States of America from 1987 to 1989 and was a visiting professor at Brandeis University in Boston, United States of America, at Harvard Medical school in Cambridge, United States of America, and at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. He is the author of more than 110 scientific publications in international peer-reviewed, indexed journals with more than 5,200 citations and an h-index of 41. He is the principal investigator on more than 25 national and international competitive public projects.
Other indicators of the quality of his scientific production include six uninterrupted six-year terms in research since 1984, one six-year term in transfer, and 14 doctoral theses directed. He is a member of the editorial review boards for the journals Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience and CANCERS. As part of his teaching work, he has taught courses on biochemistry and molecular biology at the UMA Faculty of Sciences for biology, environmental sciences, chemistry, and biochemistry undergraduate degrees since 1988. Furthermore, he has participated in numerous doctoral programs at the UMA and the International University of Andalusia (UNIA, for its initials in Spanish). He currently serves as coordinator for a course in the Master’s Degree in Advanced Biotechnology at the UMA.
Notable among his research evaluation work is his role as expert assessor for the Life Sciences speech for the European Union’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, Horizon 2020, and Horizon Europe excellence programs since 2003. He is an assessor for research projects for the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Innovation, and the National Agency for Evaluation and Futurology (ANEP, for its initials in Spanish). He is a member of the review board for Ramón y Cajal postdoctoral contracts in biomedicine, an assessor for research projects and grants for the Board of Life Sciences of the Andalusia Regional Government, and an expert assessor for the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Promotion of Argentina, the Fund for Scientific and Technological Research (FONCYT, for its initials in Spanish), and the National Science Centre of Krakow, Poland
Natalia Mena Vázquez es licenciada en Medicina por la Universidad de Málaga en 2010 y Doctora por la Universidad de Málaga, en 2016. Facultativa Especialista de Reumatología de la Unidad Clínica de Reumatología del Hospital Regional Universitario de Málaga desde 2016. Es Subdirectora médica y Jefa de Sección de la Unidad Clínica de Reumatología del Hospital Regional Universitario de Málaga desde 2021. Además, es Co-Investigadora Responsable del grupo de investigación ‘Enfermedades Inflamatorias y Autoinmunes’ del Instituto. También es miembro del grupo PAIDI CTS-1034, denominado grupo de estudio de enfermedades reumáticas inflamatorias desde 2017.
Por otro lado, es colaboradora de la Red de Investigación en Enfermedades Reumáticas y de colaboradora de las Redes de Investigación Cooperativa Orientada a Resultados en Salud, Coordinadora Clínica de la Red Andaluza de Investigación para la Investigación en Enfermedades Reumáticas y coordinadora de la Unidad de Investigación del Hospital Regional Universitario de Málaga. Vocal y Responsable de Comisión de Investigación de la Sociedad Española de Reumatología. Es Tutora Clínica desde 2014 y Colaboradora Honoraria de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Málaga desde 2020. Tiene experiencia en investigación con contratos previos como equivalente a ‘Juan Rodés’ de 2018-2020, siendo Investigadora Principal de 7 proyectos competitivos a nivel nacional y colaboradora en más de 10 proyectos. Participa como Investigadora Principal en 5 ensayos clínicos y colabora en más de 40 ensayos clínicos en Fases II, III y IV de la Unidad de Investigación en enfermedades mediadas inmunológicamente.
In terms of scientific quality indicators, she has authored 66 publications since 2016, leading 45 of them. In addition, she has contributed to 21 other publications not as a leader. She has made more than 150 communications to conferences, edited of scientific article and a treatise on rheumatic diseases for the Spanish Society of Rheumatology, participated in six book chapters, and holds three patents. She has supervised seven medical degree final projects, two master’s degree final projects, and four doctoral theses. She also supervises researchers during their training
José Miguel Guzmán

José Miguel Guzmán is Managing Director of IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND and the Andalusian Public Foundation for Biomedical and Health Research in Malaga (FIMABIS). He graduated in 1999 from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Granada and during the following years he completed his residency specialising in Hospital Pharmacy at the Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital in Malaga. During this time, she obtained a degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Malaga and spent time at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine specialising in Pharmacoeconomics.
He later completed a Master’s Degree in Health Economics and Management of Healthcare Organisations from the Andalusian School of Public Health and enrolled in an Executive MBA at the University of Navarre’s IESE Business School. In 2012, he graduated with first class honours from the Public Health and Prevention doctoral degree programme of the University of Málaga's Faculty of Medicine.
He has extensive experience as a Specialist Physician in the Hospital Pharmacy Department and in healthcare management, having worked in management positions as a Project Manager and Quality Manager at the Marina Salud Hospital (Alicante).
From 2011 to May 2018, he was in charge of management for the Biomedical Research Institute of Córdoba (IMIBIC), managing research and innovation at that centre
