Professor Francisco J. Tinahones receives the award for best senior diabetes researcher in Spain

The Scientific Director of IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND and Head of the Endocrinology and Nutrition Department at the Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital in Malaga has been awarded at the XXXV National Congress of the Spanish Diabetes Society for his brilliant career.

 

More than 1,500 scientists, researchers, practitioners, device developers and healthcare providers from all over Spain have come together at the XXXV National Congress of the Spanish Diabetes Society held in the ‘magical’ Granada from 10 to 12 April. Among the winners of the Spanish Diabetes Society's award for best senior clinical researcher were ‘Rodríguez Miñón’ highlights Francisco J. Tinahones, Scientific Director of IBIMA Plataforma BIONAND and Head Researcher of group A-02, ‘Obesity, diabetes and its comorbidities: prevention and treatment’ at the Institute of Biomedical Research of Malaga.

Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Nutrition at the Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital in Malaga and Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Malaga, the prize will be awarded to Francisco J. Tinahones 15,000 euros, as well as a commemorative plaque for his outstanding scientific career aimed at alleviating a disease that is already affecting some six million Spaniards approximately.

‘I am proud to receive the Rodríguez Miñón prize. I would like to thank the Spanish Diabetes Society for this very special distinction for me’, said the Scientific Director of the IBIMA BIONAND Platform. ‘I would like to emphasise that the achievements of any researcher are not individual and are the result of the hard work of a team. A team that tries to contribute our grains of sand to improve the quality of life of people suffering from diabetes and its comorbidities’, Francisco J. Tinahones concluded the conference.

Technology as a starting point

From 10-12 April, a number of inspiring scientists presented papers and sessions to examine and discuss the crucial issues in diabetes, as well as the ongoing scientific and technological revolutions.

TinahonesThe programme was notable for the diversity of speakers and for its various sessions and meetings with experts addressing all kinds of topics related to the field at the 35th edition of the SED National Congress.

Francisco J. Tinahones, a reference in Spain

Francisco J. Tinahones has published more than 600 scientific research articles related to obesity as the main cause of the development of diabetes and on diabetes itself, being one of the most internationally cited scientists in our country in these research areas. He has participated in more than 100 clinical trials related to obesity and diabetes. He has received numerous awards for his scientific career, including the SEEN award for the best scientific group career and the SEEDO gold medal.
